Global Village Consulting Inc. announces completion of work for a portal and Content Management system enhancement for LA.com Vancouver, BC, September 10, 2004 -- Global Village Consulting Inc. (GVC) announces the completion of system enhancement and ongoing maintenance of the portal and Content Management system for LA.com. The purpose of the work performed by GVC for LA.com was to enhance an existing portal and CMS during their site restructuring. These desired effect of the enhancements was to provide significant new functionality and to eliminate or optimize identified system bottlenecks enabling the system to perform for efficient response time and memory usage. GVC provided staff members to the existing LA.com development team both as development members and development team lead. GVC staff helped the LA.com team identify the bottlenecks and where in the code they were occurring and to optimize these functions though algorithm choice, creative use of caching, and elimination of problem code. GVC team members worked with LA.com staff to translate visual, oral, and written specifications into designs and working prototypes. They also provided feedback to the editorial and design teams on the impact and cost of changes being considered, enabling these teams to make informed decisions on what new features to have implemented. The GVC staff then worked with LA.com developers to implement the changes and new features and to manage and deploy the new system. The project used WebObjects, CVS, xCode (Apple IDE), Eclipse, Subversion (svn), OpenBase, Apache, and OS X for development and deployment. The deployed new system now provides faster site access to end users and the usability of the CMS to internal users has been vastly improved. With the conclusion of the project, LA.com has contracted GVC to provide ongoing product support for the system. During the initial phases of the project, GVC team members performed work in Los Angeles, California. However, given the variety of communication technology available today, GVC team members were able to return to Vancouver, BC and perform the remaining work on the project from there. All team members, whether in Los Angeles or Vancouver, were able to communicate easily on the project over the internet using web-cam.
